APRIL 23, 1941 – FEBRUARY 19, 2023

Rick passed away February 19, 2023 at the age of 81 after battling kidney and lung cancer with complications from colon surgery.  Rick was born in Detroit to Melvin and Alma Ellswood. He grew up in Detroit and attended Redford High School with his older brother Ron.Rick worked at Detroit Diesel for 35 years as a machinist operator. He retired in 2000.

Rick married Denise in 1966 and has 3 children from this marriage of 14 years: Brian, Scott and Jennifer.  Rick remarried in October 26, 1984, after meeting Connie while the two were working at Detroit Diesel. In 1987, they had a daughter, Michelle. Rick loved to take Michelle to her activities, like horseback riding, snow skiing, water skiing and bowling.

Rick loved going to Tigers and Red Wings games and complaining about their poor play while watching them on TV with his family.  Rick enjoyed all of his trips, activities and vacations with his travel group party, boat rides on the Detroit Princess and Diamond Jack along the Detroit river, and antiquing with Connie.

His hobbies included bike riding, bowling, kayaking, wood working and making bird houses, going to art and craft fairs. Rick loved gardening and was always trying to make his garden more beautiful by adding flowers and wind chimes.  Rick had a love of chocolate and indulged in a bowl of ice cream nightly.

Rick is survived by his beloved wife Connie, his children, Brian, Scott (Carrie), Jennifer and Michelle (Michael Belanger) and his grandchildren, including Mikala, Cassandra, Spencer, Seth and Lucas. He is also survived by his brother, Ronald “Ron” Ellswood. Rick will also be missed by his dogs Boo and Bambi.

I was so sorry to hear of Rick's passing.  He and I were good friends at Redford.  I remember him as gentle and kind, a wonderful family man.  I knew his parents and brother Ron--great people.  I met Connie and his two boys around 1970, but then unfortunately Rick and I lost touch until a couple of years ago.  I heard from him at Christmas and learned he was suffering from cancer.  I'm sure he will be greatly missed by his large family and many friends.
