• 2003: Retired again from Amphitheater Public Schools, Tucson Arizona.

Redford Memories:

• RHS Band and Orchestra. Mr. Humbert, then Mr. Arnoldi. Mr. Fenby. I played the baritone. Never was very good, but these men put up with me anyway.
• ROTC and the Range. We even got to bring our 22 caliber rifles in the evening and shoot in the range with Mr. Stuckey supervising.
• We had (and I still have it!) a 1956 Chevy Bel Air. Sierra Gold & Adobe Beige. 265 in^3 Short Stroke V-8.
• John David Fletcher & I met in a 9th grade Algebra class. We are still best friends, aka brothers. Fletch was the "Stud of Honor" for my marriage with Ardis on June 25, 2005.
• My Physics teacher Mr. Blasyk and his trips piloting a B-36 to Thule Greenland and back on some weekends.
• The campaign for Class President. I supported Tom Doyle who was the favorite until Skip Wells ran a spectacular campaign and came from behind to win.
• The Senior Prom. The girl I wanted to take was already going with another class member until he decided to take someone else. By then I had a new date and did not want to break it. I drove the '56 Chevy with John Fletcher and his date Carol Hawley & managed to get a traffic ticket on the way downtown.
• Standing outside the RHS auditorium next to a wet electric pole and getting a shock.
• Bill Tokar and his stage crew.
• Heating HgO in a test tube to show we could decompose it into Hg & oxygen. If we got mercury poisoning we did not know it. The Chem Teachers who did this all the time had far more intense exposure.
• The launching of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik I on October 4, 1957. Learned about this the same day I went to Sue Appeldoorn's where she had a gathering of friends.

Education after Redford:

University of Michigan: BS Education 1964
Wayne State University: MA Science Education 1972
Many post MA classes, especially science, throughout my teaching career

• 1961: Fall semester at the University of Hawaii.
• 1968: Purchased farm in Cedar, Michigan which is now home.
• 1969: Summer NSF Institute University of Alaska.
• 1970-1989: Amateur Beekeeper in Cedar Michigan.
• 1980: Married Judith Pierce.
• 1983: William Edward Herrold Born.
• 1987: Divorced.
• 1987-Present: Maintain Miller-Herrold Airstrip on farm in Cedar along with our neighbors to the north. The grass strip is licensed as a Personal Use Private Field by the FAA as 28MI. Millers have a classic 1947 Stinson and hangar on their north end. We keep our 1974 Cessna in our hangar on our south end.
• 1999: Visited aviation friends with my son in the UK.
• 2000: Built new home in Oro Valley, Arizona.
• 2003-Present: Constructed "Desert Peak Observatory" a private project in a remote part of the Arizona High Sonoran Desert with my astronomy teaching wife, Ardis.
• 2005: Married Ardis Maciolek.
• 2005: Went back to Hawaii on our honeymoon.
• 2007: Gave a perpetual easement to the Leelanau Conservancy for our farm so that it will always be protected and never subdivided or commercially developed.
• 2008: Ardis Herrold, my wife, President of NESTA (National Earth Science Teachers Association). This makes me "First Gentleman!" :-)
• 2009: Ardis Herrold selected by the MSTA (Michigan Science Teachers Association) Science Teacher of the Year.

The Arizona High Sonoran Desert is full of wildlife. Our tortoise friend visits from time to time. On September 5 (John Fletcher's Birthday!) he came into our observatory. A 12 inch ruler is along side for scale. :-)

A U-Tube video link is above.
