Burt School

I was in Michigan last week and drove the old neighborhood including Burt School which looked pretty good and also brought back many memories particularly the teachers.

Mrs. Hansen, 5th grade.  My mother was her room mother but not sure what that entailed and mom doesn't remember exactly except she represented that classroom at PTA.

Mrs. Bacheleer (sp?) 6th grade, who taught a new form of handwriting: heavy on the downstroke and light on the upstroke.  I mastered it and liked it but sure was difficult to break later on.

Mrs. Dickerson, 7th grade, with her gray/blue hair, and her home on Lahser Road.  I liked her because she took a real interest in her students.

Miss Boyle, 8th grade, was tough and I agree I felt she could not wait to retire.

Mrs. Little and Mr. Mose:   One semester the boys going to home economics and the girls going to shop.  I still have the wooden pot holder I made in shop.

Mr. Zulauf was one of my favorites as well as Mr. McPherson.  Michigan was celebrating a milestone birthday and Sue Appledoorn and I were responsible for setting up a bulletin board for the occasion.  Mr. Zulauf claimed afterward that we knew more about Michigan than he did.

Mrs. Egan, art teacher.  She frequently sent students to the principal's office if they talked out of turn.   Mrs. Jackson, music teacher, who further inspired my love of music.  Mr. Gunn, gym teacher, who I had a crush on.

Other memories:  airraid drills into the tunnels, dancing in gym class, Friday night square dances (still love to dance), getting out of homeroom once a week to take violin lessons from Mr. Nadler, the school fairs, parent/teacher nights, getting teacher/ classmate signatures in my autograph book before leaving for high school.
