Jack Inch

For years, one of my favorite stories is about being in Jack Inch's economic class. He was a brand new teacher not much older that we seniors were. On the first day of class he seemed quite stern and demanding telling us how our grades would be determined and that we had to have blue books on hand. We were concerned that he was going "college" on us and would be very tough. Among other things that first day he said that from time to time he would subject us to what he called "little quizies". He ended the session by giving us a reading assignment of several chapters in the text book. Of course as was the tradition, nobody did any homework on the first night of school and we were devastated when he laid on one of his "little quizies" on the second day. It was an unheard of essay exam and difficult as I remember. Nobody had read the chapters and only a few had even purchased and brought blue books. Everyone was stunned and you could have heard a pin drop when the bell rang and we filed by his desk to turn in blank papers. Out of the almost complete silence, one of our female classmates (maybe she remembers who she was) was heard by all to say, "If that's one of his little quizies, I'd like to see one of his little testies!" Of course, that broke the tension and brought gales of laughter. Later we all learned to appreciate Jack's skills and help in preparing us for what we would face in college. Besides being a good teacher and great friend to students, he coached part time and played a big role in many other extra-curricular activities including the NYC - Washington DC trip where tongue-in-cheek he tried to discipline those of us who broke the rules. I recently tracked Jack down and found he's still in the educational business. He's now at Oakland University. He expressed interest in our reunion and I sure hope he's able to make it.
